
Came across this in the news. It's called Wolfram Alpha and it touts itself as a Knowledge Engine.
Now, if you didn't bother to keep reading and clicked the link straight away, you'll notice a key difference. It isn't a search engine. It looks like one - but it actually provides you information about whatever you happen to enter. Enter "Hubble Space Telescope" and it'll tell you where the thing is. Type in "Credit Card" and you'll reach for the scissors as it computes interest.
The news story I heard that introduced me to this was (I think) correct. This utility is impressively useful and as it gains and collects more information it'll be exactly the thing that everyone wants from the internet in the first place: reputable accurate facts - not a stupid wikipedia page edited by some 7th grader debating the laurels of Power Rangers or notifications every time Oprah spouts out 140 characters of verbal diarrhea on Twitter. (Yea, I said it.)
